Getting started writing an article or story can be a painful task for writers.  Writing is not easy, and getting started presents its own unique problems.

Writing for Writers - Getting Started

You want to write, but you don't know what to write. You had hundreds of ideas before you sat down in front of your computer, but your mind went blank. What can you do?

* Don't Despair

 This is a common problem. It's called writer's block. The key to beating writer's block is to write. You don't have to write something dynamic. You don't even have to use good grammar. Just sit down and write. It doesn't matter what you write, just keep writing. Soon the creative juices will start flowing and the block will be gone.

* Tricks

One trick I use to beat writer's block is to think of a member of my family and write about some of his character traits. I might write about some fun adventure with a family member. An embarrassing moment for a family member is always good to write about. Be sure and use fake names for your characters. (You don't want to hurt someone's feelings.)

Sometimes I start with a nursery rhyme. Something like: Mary had a little lamb that had fleas the size of alligators. She sprayed the lamb with DDT and the fleas jumped in the river.

Believe it or not, the above example reminded me of an adventure I had with my two older brothers. The result was a humorous short story.

Sometimes when I get stumped I write a "take-that."   A "take-that" is a situation that I force on one of my characters.  I may have someone smash an ice cream cone in his face, or have him locked in a dark room, or have him chased by a gang.  It doesn't matter.  I enjoy watching the character develop as he reacts to the situation, (usually the situation is unrelated to the story I'm writing at the time), but it helps me with character development, and I have a great time doing it.

After the exercise I'm usually more focused and ready to return to the task at hand.

* The Point

Getting started is the hardest part for most writers. There are as many tricks to getting started as there are writers. Find what helps you get started and you'll be well on your way.
